Traffic Calming Commission Meeting Minutes

Monday, November 28, 2005

Newfane Traffic Calming Committee

Committee Meeting: Monday, November 28, 2005

Related Discussion at Selectboard Meeting: Thursday, December 1, 2005

Present at the 11/30 meeting: Paul Dedell, Chris Petrak, Dan DeWalt, Pat Halloran

Absent: Peter Lilienthal, Walter Phelps

The Meeting began at 7:00 pm.

Calming Committee: With the onset of winter weather, the cones may be best retired until spring.

Calming Committee: Investigate different brands, heights and durability of cones per Walter’s research.

Selectboard: The Board supports the purchase of traffic delineators that are taller and thinner than the current cones yet with the same weighted bottoms.

A suggestion was made and supported to vertically print on one side of the delineator the speed limit (25 mph) and on the other side “Town of Newfane” in reflective tape/paint. This would put the ownership of the cones on the town and “legitimize” what some feel is a “homemade” attempt at traffic control.

Calming Committee: Purchase 10 cones in January for spring use.

Selectboard: The Board supports the purchase of 5 cones.

Calming Committee: Expand placement of cones to include S. Newfane, confer with Newfane proper trustees for possible use in the village.

Selectboard: The Board supports placement of delineators in the following locations: 2 in Williamsville, 2 in South Newfane and 1 on the South Wardsboso Road end of West Street.

Calming Committee: Pair the spring debut with publicity in the Reformer.

Calming Committee: A letter was received by the Selectboard (11/29) from a concerned citizen citing both the flimsiness of the cones and the use of volunteers.

Selectboard: The Board agrees the experiment has been a success, is heartened by the positive residential response and is taking steps to respond to the negative comments.

Calming Committee: At the 11/28 meeting, the committee continued to investigate volunteer assistance.

Selectboard: The Board supports the continuation of volunteers.

Calming Committee: Enforcement Update: not much to report. Dan attended a meeting on 11/29 with the Selectboard and the VLCT in Williamsville to discuss general law enforcement issues in the area.

The committee agreed to continue the search for representation from the South Wardsboro Road area to join the Traffic Calming Group.

Meeting adjourned at 7:35 pm. The next meeting will be Monday, January 30th in Williamsville. Topics include cone update next steps on the traffic calming horizon.
